Juanita's Kitchen: Marmite Scones

Kids coming home for the weekend? Expecting guests? Or just feeling like a mouthwatering treat...?

We have just the thing for you!

Most people who have had the pleasure of visiting Juanita (Kobus' mother) will be very familiar with her famous Marmite scones. These delightful treats have become a weekend staple in her home, always ready for when her children and grand children visit, or guests are stopping by. The savory, cheesy flavor paired with a rich Marmite butter glaze makes them unforgettable. Serve them fresh from the oven, and watch them disappear in no time!

Marmite Scone Recipe

- 3 cups cake flour
- 5 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 40g butter

Start by rubbing the butter into the flour, baking powder and salt until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of grated cheddar cheese, followed by 1 1/2 cups of milk, mixing until a soft dough forms. Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough to about 5cm thick. Use a cutter to shape the scones and place them on a greased baking tray. Bake at 200°C for 12-15 minutes, until golden.

For the glaze, melt 100g of butter and stir in 1 tablespoon of Marmite or Bovril. Drizzle this over the warm scones just before serving.

This recipe yields 10-12 scones, perfect for sharing.

Enjoy! 🍪☕
