Kobus Burger, the sixth-generation custodian of Rietvallei, is both the CEO and winemaker of the estate. Alongside his wife, Elizabeth, they continue the proud family tradition with dedication and passion. They have four children—two daughters and twin sons. Elizabeth plays a vital role in the business, managing the historic Manor House and venue facilities. She is also renowned for her culinary skills, often treating special guests and international agents to her exceptional dishes.
Kobus’ journey began at Paarl Boys High School, where he matriculated in 1993. He then spent a year in the South African Navy, completing an Officers Course at the SA Naval College in Gordon’s Bay. In 1995, he pursued Mechanical Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, earning his degree four years later. After working in the engineering field for three years, his heart led him back to the family farm and in 2002, he officially joined his father, Johnny, at Rietvallei.
This pivotal year marked significant changes, including Rietvallei’s decision to part ways with Distell after 25 years and appointing Vinimark as their new national distributor. Kobus also immersed himself in winemaking, gaining hands-on experience during harvests at The Bergkelder (Stellenbosch) and later at the Henri Bourgeois Family Wine Cellar in Sancerre, France. The year concluded on a personal high note when he and Elizabeth married in November and settled on the estate.
In 2003, Kobus completed his first harvest under the mentorship of his father, Johnny. By 2004, Johnny shifted his focus to vineyard management, entrusting the winemaking to Kobus. Since then, he has meticulously expanded Rietvallei’s portfolio, shaping it into the diverse and award-winning collection it is today. With a deep respect for tradition and an eye on innovation, Kobus continues to lead Rietvallei into the future, honoring the legacy of five generations before him.
