Our Heritage

Rietvallei Wine Estate stands as a pillar of history and tradition, proudly marking 160 years of family winemaking in the heart of the Robertson Wine Valley. Founded in 1864 by Alewyn Petrus Burger, Rietvallei was passed to his son, Jacobus Francois (Koos), beginning an unbroken lineage of passionate vintners. Over the decades, each generation built upon the dedication and craftsmanship of those before them, shaping Rietvallei into one of South Africa’s most respected wine estates.

Under the guidance of Johnny Burger, Rietvallei transitioned from a grape supplier to a fully independent estate, producing its first estate-bottled wine in 1975—the now-iconic Rietvallei Rooi Muskadel. His vision and pioneering spirit laid the foundation for today’s success. In 2002, his son Kobus Burger took over the reins, bringing a new era of innovation while staying true to the family’s legacy of quality and excellence.

Rietvallei’s history is not only preserved in our vines, wines and cellar but also in our family stories, traditions and the deep connection we have with our land. Our tasting room—housed in the original homestead—showcases a treasure trove of historic photographs and artifacts, offering a glimpse into the estate’s rich past.

As we move forward, the seventh generation is already preparing to continue the journey, ensuring that Rietvallei’s name remains synonymous with heritage, quality and timeless family tradition.
